Disability is not an obstacle to Ambitions / Progress in Life I believe that the first obstacle for the differently-abled is more mental than physical. Lack of confidence and acceptance are two major shortcomings that stop from working to the best of their ability. I grew up with POLIO , a congenital disease. As far as most people are concerned, it‟s not something I live with, it is something I „suffer‟ from. As a result, other people usually have two types of approaches to me. I am either pitied / shunned or made into an object of inspiration. This has always had an impact on me. It has pushed me to prove that I am neither an object of pity nor heroism. I consider myself very fortunate to have my family that is very positive and supportive towards me. They have also faced challenges having a disabled member in the family, but they have never made me feel different or treated me differently. I had been to UK to visit my brother, what amazed me most was the availability of infrastructure, both social and institutional support for persons with various types of disabilities. Persons with disabilities could pursue formal education inspite of their conditions. I also found, a supportive attitude amongst the citizens towards persons with special needs. Having personally experienced a lot of discrimination from friends and at times from the extended family, I decided that it is time to prove my capabilities and create awareness about disability in Indian community.
