Sangeeta Desarda is an advocate and a human-rights activist currently practicing at High Court of Judicature at Bombay High Court, Aurangabad Bench. She completed her BA in History, Sociology and Economics from SB College, Aurangabad. Due to personal circumstances, she had to discontinue her education in the field of Law. Inspite of this, after a massive gap of 10 years in her education, she persisted and went on to complete her LLB from the M. P. Law College affiliated with Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. Sangeeta has done considerable amount of work in the sector of women's rights and gender equality. She is the co-founder of Arihant Law, a law firm that specializes in the matters of the human rights law and family law, focused on making justice accessible for the weaker sections of the society. She is also the president of Arihant Foundation, an NGO that seeks to educate and empower women and young girls at the grassroots levels and inculcate sustainable development values in urban and rural masses. She was a member of the executive committee of the Advocates’ Association of Aurangabad High Court. She was also listed amongst the top 100 Women Icon by Foxclues India and has also received the nomination for the Women In Disaster Risk Reduction (WINDRR) leadership awards amongst 153 women from 22 different countries. She is a member of prestigious international women-led organizations like - AWID, Global Network for Women Peacebuilders, Global Fund for Women, WINDRR and a proud commitment maker at the Generation Equality Forum, Paris.
In her words, “With the world facing a crisis in its development owing to the natural and man-made issues like increasing global warming and overpopulation I realised a need to take actions to achieve a better and more sustainable future for us and for our coming generation. Also the issue of gender inequality is serious point of concern in the current society. I want the youth of today to be the flag bearers of the fight against these societal evils and the women of the nation to understand their rights and the opportunities that the world has evaded so far for them.
